EDLD 5366 DIGITAL GRAPHICS COURSE REFLECTIONS

Self-Assessment

This course has helped me think outside of the box. I find myself looking at movie posters, magazine ads, and even newspapers differently thanks to the four principles of design listed by Yearwood: repetition, alignment, proximity, and contrast (Yearwood). For the logo and newsletter assignments, I tried to incorporate these elements throughout.

I was very comfortable with creating a logo as I’ve been helping a co-worker make brochures and get web ideas for her new business. I was also comfortable with the newsletter as I’ve made a few for my classes and in other technology training I’ve had.

Learn as a Learner

However, the most interesting and anticipated assignment for me was the animation. I’ve been aware of Scratch for a few years, but was never really able to incorporate in my lessons due to lack of time. Richardson (2007) says we can create and publish as easily as we read, and we must teach our students to leverage this ablility and add their own work to the global conversation in meaningul ways. I learned a great deal from the tutorials provided and I am now motivated to try to find the time to use this program.

With WestEd RTEC’s technology tips, I was reminded of some of the features of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Lifelong Learning Skills

My department recently purchased some new digital cameras this year, so hopefully we can do some assignments or projects that add Scratch as well as our original movie maker plans. As a professional educator, I should constantly be looking for ways to continuously engage my students, especially since I’m in the technology field. I want my students to leave with a foundation of knowledge. However, I know I also must help my colleagues come aboard too with integrating technology into their lessons.
